Common musk turtles are native to Michigan and most of the eastern United States. Musk turtles are aquatic turtles who spend most of their time in the water scavenging the bottom of freshwater ponds or lakes. They have very long necks which help them reach around their shell to fend off any predators or to quickly grab an unsuspecting fish swimming by.
Common musk turtles, or stinkpot turtles, get their name from the “musky” smell they release from scent glands when threatened.
