How to hookup a battery charger

If you need to charge your car battery, heres how to hook up a battery charger safely and correctly. Before attempting to connect your battery charger, make sure you have the correct type of charger for your battery. There are many different types of battery chargers, so be sure to check your batterys manual for the appropriate size and type. Also, make sure the charger is unplugged and that there is no power running through it.

Once you have the right charger, begin the connection process by attaching the positive cable first. Red is typically the color associated with positive cables, so it will be easy to identify. Connect the positive cable end to the positive (+) terminal of the battery, then connect the other end to the positive (+) terminal of the charger.

Next, attach the negative cable. Negative cables are usually black. Connect this end to the negative (-) terminal of the battery, then connect the other end to the negative (-) terminal of the charger. Make sure the clamps on each end of the cable are secure and free from corrosion.

The last step is to plug in your battery charger and turn it on. Be sure to set your charger to the correct voltage and amperage for your battery, as this will ensure it charges properly. Consult your battery manual for this information.

Once your charger is turned on and set, leave it running for a few hours to fully charge your battery. Do not attempt to disconnect or use your car while it is charging, as this can damage both your vehicle and the charger itself. When the charging is complete, unplug the charger and disconnect both of the cables from the battery.
