June 1, 8, 15, & 22 - Wednesdays, 6:00 – 8:00 PM - Have you ever been curious about a wildflower, but frustrated trying to figure it out on your own? This four-week course, taught by Director Nate Fuller, is designed to give you the tools to identify our local wildflowers while learning about their interesting natural history. We will use Newcomb's Wildflower Guide as our main text to learn the basics of plant identification. The guide will also be availalble for purchase at our bookstore. Each session will include in-the-field practice in identification to get you primed for peak wildflower season in the coming month. For ages 16 and up. June 4, Saturday, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM - Join Sarett naturalists to learn about habitat restoration at Sarett and how you can identify invasive plants and apply similar restoration techniques at your own house. This will be a hands-on class where you also help us remove invasive plant species to help our native flora and fauna thrive!
June 5, Sunday, 1:00 – 3:00 PM -Have you ever wanted to learn kayak safety and rescue? Gain the skills to be a safe, responsible paddler with Sarett naturalists. Participants will learn how to enter and exit their kayak in various conditions, including in a capsizing event. Ages 16+. Meet at North Lake Park in Lincoln Township. We will provide you a kayak, paddle, and PFD. Members/$15, Non-members/$20.
June 10 – 12, Friday - Sunday - We invite you to participate in our long weekend kayak trip with Sarett naturalists completing stretches of the National Wild and Scenic Manistee River. This Manistee meanders through sections of Manistee National Forest and features high bluffs, clear water, and wildlife such as bald eagles. The gentle current and lack of obstacles make this a very relaxing paddle event. View the itinerary and more information.
June 11, Saturday, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM -“Go Native” by adding native wildflowers, grasses, and ferns to your landscape. This year’s sale will feature many plants for sunny areas of your yard, especially for pollinators. A variety of plants will be available for both sand & clay soils. Shop early for the best selection. Sarett will continue to sell plants after the weekend during regular business hours until they are all gone.
June 18, Saturday, 10:00 AM – Noon - Join a naturalist in helping restore and maintain native plant ecosystems at Sarett. Volunteers will help by removing invasive plants while learning to identify key species of both native and invasive plants. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Call (269) 927-4832 to register.
June 19, Sunday, 1:00 PM - Join a naturalist to learn about bats in southwest Michigan and to help you walk through building your own bat house. Building materials and tools provided. June 25, Saturday, 2:00 PM - Take this opportunity to learn about the box turtle population assessment at Sarett and meet John Rucker, master of the Turtle Dogs. Learn how he trains his dogs to search for turtles through woodlands, wetlands, and grasses and hear some of his favorite stories. The Turtle Dogs will not be working.
